Colors of the Wind

Animism is a word used to group religions or worldviews that assume a natural order that should be respected and worshiped. It is a belief in a supernatural power that organizes and animates the material universe. People who hold these beliefs would say the stars and the changes of the seasons have important meanings that influence the fate of individuals.  Animists strive to live in harmony with the natural rhythms of the Earth, after all, they would say, we are the sons and daughters of the earth and our well-being depends on living in harmony with it.

Read the song below. It is addressed to John Smith, a European who is ignorant of Pocahantas' worldview. What are the implied beliefs of Mr. Smith in the song?(Name at least 3)  Finally, why do you think Pocahantas asks so many questions?  .

Colors of the Wind by Vanessa Williams

You think I'm an ignorant savage

You've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know?
You don't know ...

You think you own whatever land you land on

The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people

Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest

Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers

The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high does the sycamore grow?

If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned

We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still

All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind

Some of John Smith's implied beliefs are that Pocahantas is a savage, that the only people who are people are those who look like him and live by his own ways, and that any land that he lands on is automatically his own. Pocahantas is asking so him so many questions because she wants to plant a seed of self-doubt within him, so as to help open his mind up to her own animistic world-view and free him from his limited European ways of thinking.

  4. The implied beliefs of Mr. Smith in the song were: Pocahontas and her people are simply ignorant savages, that land is something to be discovered and claimed as one's own, and that only his people (white people) are people. I think that Pocahontas asks so many questions because she wants to make him re-think the way in which he thinks about the world. She wants to show him how she sees the earth. - Mya Carbajal

  5. John believes that she is a savage due to that she is not like her she doesn't come from his perspective. He also believes that animals are just meat and don"t have value. He also believes That land is just land he dosen't really know the value behind it. There's actually live on the land that he calls territory.I believe that Pocahontas ask so many questions o he can question if he really does believe what he believes. She is trying to make him rethink what he thinks he believes with questions.

In the song Colors of the Wind it implies that John Smith's beliefs are that he thinks pocahantas and her people a savages, he also seems to believe that he owns whatever land he lands on and that earth is a dead thing he can claim, as well as thinking that the only people who are people are the ones that look and think like him. I believe Pocahantas asks a lot question to see if John Smith will start to question wither his belief is right. She also asks these questio to see if John can see what she trhough her perspective.

  7. Angel Martinez-I think the reason she asked so many its so Mr. smith can realize all the things he and the Europeans do is wrong and should stop.

I think she asked so many questions because she wants people to think about what happens in the nature that people don't know about it. That there's something that has to do with everything that was put there which will be someone important. Also that he wants people to believe that everything is living here for a reason.

He asks so many questions because he owns all the land he lands on. He likes showing what nature is really about and how it feels to be surrounded by nature. He is trying to show that animals have a great heart even though they are out in the world.

  22. MarshalI- John Smith said that Pocahantas is a savage that people who look like him are the only ones who are peopl and that any land that he is on is his. Pocahantas is asking him lots of questions because she wants him to see the world as she sees it like animistic not like his view.

  23. Israel Cisneros - the many questions asked towards Smith, implying his beliefs, are to challenge his beliefs and show him a different perspective on the world around him. examples of Smith's beliefs are that people like Pocahantas are savage, he still has yet to understand the unknown, and he is lacking empathy

  24. Erik Perez-- Three implied beliefs are that he thinks only him and his people are the only people out there. Another belief is that he wasn't seeing the nature around. lastly he thought the world was a dead thing and he was here to claim part of it. Pocahontas asked many questions to see if if mr.Smith admired the world just like she does.

  29. that the world should be treated right, we shouldn't buy or sell anything that's not right, the earth gives us everything for free. people like him are ignorant and don't see the value in life that's why she calls him a savage he hunts and kills animals destroys lands and takes what he wants, if people want land they get it because they think they can.they don't see the view of her the Pocahontas, her beliefs are that everyone should be together"we need to sing with all the voices".she says that nature valuable to life important.

  31. Three beliefs Mr. smith had in this poem is that, Anything can be bought and sold, and any animal can be captured or killed, and also Smith is too blind to see what earth is really worth. Also phochantas asked so many question because smith is seeing the bigger picture of the spirit world.

  34. I think the reason Pocahantas asks so many questions is because shes questioning his beliefs, not understanding why he thinks nature is just something you can own and treat like if its nothing. Smith's beliefs contain of anyone who isn't a civilized white man is considered a savage. He also believes that anything can have a price, and that any land can be claimed. Then he thinks shes an ignorant savage just because she doesn't act and know about the European lifestyle that he lives.

  36. Esther S. I think Mr.Smith implied beliefs are that he does not believe that nature is alive that has feelings like mountains, rivers, animals and even rocks have feelings, it is as if he thinks that every place he walks on is dead and that every thing he looks at is from him and he can take, and he thinks that Pocahontas and her people are savage. Pocahontas ask many questions because she want to understands why Smith is very mature and doesn't want to believe her beliefs and also she want to change Mr.Smith's mind so that they both think and believe that nature is alive and is as part of our family.
